Our Community

Diversity is a core value of the parish community as can be seen in our ministry, worship life and church membership. As an urban parish we welcome    people from varied backgrounds, races, sexual  orientation and education.  “Draw the Circle Wide,” describes our commitment to Christ.

Calvary St. Andrew's Parish is a vibrant Presbyterian congregation located in Rochester's South Wedge neighborhood. Our urban context and our deep faith in Christ’s call for love and justice invites us to be in mission and ministry in the neighborhood, the city of Rochester and the world. As a progressive congregation Biblically and theologically we are not afraid to tackle the hard issues of today’s world such as not simply feeding the hungry but asking why people are hungry.

We've always combined the strength of tradition with the freedom to question, challenge and change old ways in light of new understanding.

Worship As A Response To God’s Generosity

In response to God’s generosity we celebrate the Sabbath with a spirited worship service at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Through fellowship, prayer, and a variety of musical styles and selections we bring our hearts into God’s presence.

The dynamic preaching and heart felt music coupled with the weekly celebration of the Lord’s Supper fill our souls to go out into the world and to better practice our faith. Children are a joyful reminder of Christ’s hospitality to be cherished and welcomed into our midst. The children gather on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the main part of the church for a children’s message then go to their Sunday School classes and rejoin us for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.

With our Pastor the Reverend Judy Lee Hay, lay people are active leaders in worship service through readings, prayers, music, drama and in serving communion. The whole people of God are invited by Christ to be fed spiritually and to go into the world to be in service. Psalm 112 resonates with God’s generosity and is a call we willingly answer.

Psalm 112 : Blessings of the Righteous

1Praise our God!  Happy are those who love God, who greatly delight in God's commandments. 2Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.   3Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.  4They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.  5It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. 6For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered forever. 7They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in God’s grace. 8Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. 9They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honour. 10The wicked see it and are angry; they gnash their teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.

We celebrate our faith, life, and community each Sunday at 10:00 am.  Come as you are, since you are welcome at our table anytime.
